Denarius of Lucius Verus (AD 161–169), struck at the Rome mint in AD 163–164, belongs to a series issued during the eastern campaigns against the Parthian Empire, conducted under the joint rule of Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Verus. These events are documented in ancient sources, particularly by Cassius Dio, and culminated in Roman successes including the capture of Artaxata and Seleucia on the Tigris, developments that are directly reflected in the imperial titulature.
The obverse shows the head of the emperor facing right with the legend L VERVS AVG ARMENIACVS, identifying Lucius Verus as Augustus and bearer of the title Armeniacus, adopted following victories in Armenia. The reverse depicts Mars standing right, holding a spear and shield, with the legend TR P III IMP II COS II. The designation TR P III refers to the third tribunician power of Lucius Verus, while IMP II records his second acclamation as imperator, formally granted by the army in recognition of military success.
