Rare Christina thaler , belonging to the issues created after the takeover of Riga by Sweden.
The design was created by Heinrich Wulff , a representative of a distinguished mint-making family whose traditions dated back several generations; his descendants later participated in designing coins for, among others, Stefan Batory and Sigismund III Vasa .
During the reign of Christina Vasa, minting activity focused almost exclusively on small denominations. The Riga mint primarily issued shillings and half-and-a-half coins, often struck from silver of lower purity to meet current circulation needs.
High-denomination coins, such as the thalers, were exceptional and produced in very limited quantities. As a result, only a small number of pieces have survived to this day, making this type particularly sought after on the collectors' market.
Coin from the distinguished collection of Count Emeryk Hutten-Czapski.
