This 2 Groschen coin was struck after the death of Queen Christiane Eberhardine, the first wife of Augustus II the Strong and the mother of Augustus III of Saxony. Their marriage, concluded in 1693, soon fell into crisis—particularly after Augustus’s coronation as King of Poland in 1697 and his conversion to Catholicism. Christiane Eberhardine, remaining a devout Lutheran, chose to live apart from her husband in Pretzsch, where she died in 1727.
The reverse commemorates her as Queen of Poland and Electress of Saxony, while the obverse shows a symbolic cypress tree with the inscription QVOT FOLIA TOT CORDA LVGENT (“as many hearts mourn as there are leaves”), emphasizing the memorial character of this issue.
