A rare 3 Groschen of Frederick II, struck at the Brzeg mint in 1544. The penultimate year of this ruler’s 3 Groschen issues, belonging to the sought-after Silesian coins that appear only very sporadically on the auction market.
Frederick II was one of the most important Silesian dukes of the first half of the 16th century. His long reign coincided with significant political, economic and religious transformations in Silesia. His coinage also included 3 Groschen pieces, a denomination that enjoyed considerable popularity in Central Europe at the time.
The obverse features a characteristic bust of Frederick II facing right, with a long beard and wearing armour. The ruler’s titulature appears around.
The reverse follows the typical design of early Silesian 3 Groschen pieces, with the denomination, titulature and date arranged in several horizontal lines. The denomination III appears at the top, with the date 1544 below.
The present example is distinguished by its remarkable Mint State freshness, very good detail and preserved mint lustre. Its excellent state of preservation is confirmed by the NGC MS61 grade.
A rare and sought-after 3 Groschen from the penultimate year of Frederick II’s issues, appearing only very sporadically on the auction market. A beautiful coin of remarkable Mint State freshness, certified by NGC as MS61.
