In the article "Free City of Gdańsk, 10 pfennigs - classification of varieties.." by Mr. Artur Jezioro we read: "Under the Treaty of Versailles after World War I, the Free City of Gdańsk was created. Without delving into the political and economic turmoil and the influences that had there in Germany and Poland. In the early 1920s, the authorities of the Free City of Gdańsk decided to replace the German Mark, which was currently in force in the country, and was commissioned to mint new coins two variants with different sizes of denomination digits (appearance). The coin with smaller digits was minted in 876 thousand pieces, while the variant with large digits was minted in 124.4 thousand pieces during its production, according to various sources, several dozen stamps were made. The result was the introduction of a huge number of variants of these coins. Variants differing in both the decoration of the obverse depicting the city's coat of arms and the reverse with various variations of frames and decorations.
