Very rare silver medal commemorating Dr. Johann Hiltner, reformer of the imperial city of Regensburg.

Diameter 26 mm, weight 10.57 g


Johann Hiltner was Counselor of the Historical Society of the University Library in Regensburg for Upper Palatinate and Regensburg. He was born in Lichtenfels, where his father Johann Hiltner worked as a lawyer and forester and managed the goodness of the Bishop of Bamberg. Dates of birth and death of Dr. Johann Hiltner are not fully known. His year of birth is given as 1485 or 1495. In the fall of 1506, Hiltner moved to the new University of Wittenberg, in 1510 he received his master's degree. He then went to study law in France, where he graduated in 1517 with a doctorate. Shortly thereafter, as a young lawyer, he began his service as Bishop's Counselor in Bamberg.
