A bronze coin of the polis of Birytis in the Troad, dated to the 4th century BC, representing a local civic issue from north-western Asia Minor in the Classical period.
Birytis (Βίρυτις), attested through numismatic material and in the geographical accounts of ancient Troad (including references by Strabo to settlements of the region), belonged to the group of smaller communities that exercised autonomous minting activity in the 4th century BC. The coinage of this city is primarily known from bronze issues distinguished by clearly local iconographic types.
The obverse depicts the head of Cabeiros wearing a pileus, facing left, with two stars above. The cult of the Cabeiri is well documented in the Greek world, particularly in the northern Aegean, and their representations also appear on the coinage of other cities in the region.
