Patagon struck at the Bruges mint in 1672 under the reign of Charles II, the last Spanish Habsburg.
These issues were produced during a period of economic and political turmoil in the Spanish Netherlands, marked by wars with France. The coin represents a typical silver trade issue of the time, widely used in Western Europe.
