An interesting Republican issue combining strong religious and military symbolism.
The elephant alludes to the long-standing emblem of the Caecilii Metelli family, first associated with their victories over Carthage. For Metellus Pius, it further symbolized his triumphs in Spain during the Sertorian War, as well as earlier campaigns in Africa.
