Very rare variety with the date in the obverse legend and the distinctive mintmark of a skull beneath the ruler’s bust – the personal sign of mintmaster Jacques Augier (1586–1590).
Coins of Henry III do not bear explicit denomination marks – they are identified by the reverse types and their diameter.
Two examples are listed in FRANCIÆ IV and four in the collection of P. Devaux (iNumis 7). The present piece was further published in Bulletin de la Société Française de Numismatique, June 2012, pp. 177–180, ill. 2.
An attractive coin with brightly lustrous surfaces, beautifully complemented by a long-aged, multicolored patina.
An item of the highest rarity, never before recorded in Polish auctions – a remarkable opportunity for collectors of Henry III’s coinage and an excellent enhancement to any advanced collection.
