This thaler was struck to commemorate the end of the Franco-Prussian War and the proclamation of the German Empire in 1871. Known as the "Siegsthaler" (Victory Thaler).
This coin symbolically marks both the triumph of Prussia and its allies over France and the unification of Germany under Wilhelm I of Hohenzollern.
