The University of Breslau (today Wrocław University) was originally founded in 1702 by Emperor Leopold I as the Jesuit Leopoldina Academy. In 1811, under Friedrich Wilhelm III of Prussia, it was reorganized and merged with the Viadrina University of Frankfurt (Oder), becoming one of the leading academic centers of Silesia and Germany.
