Thaler struck at the Hanover mint in 1859 under George V, the last King of Hanover.
This issue belongs to the final period of the kingdom’s independence, which came to an end in 1866 after the Austro-Prussian War, when Hanover was annexed by Prussia. The coin stands as a testimony both to the sovereignty of the Hanoverian dynasty and to the political transformations in 19th-century Germany.
