Taler struck at the Berlin mint in 1848 during the reign of Ernest Augustus, King of Hanover. This issue coincides with the period of the Revolutions of 1848 (Springtime of Nations), a time of significant social and political upheaval across Europe, which also affected the Kingdom of Hanover. Coins of this type served both as circulating money and as a symbol of dynastic sovereignty.
