Bavarian taler struck at the Munich mint in 1869 under King Ludwig II Wittelsbach (1864–1886).
The coin features the classic religious motif of the Virgin Mary as Patroness of Bavaria, a type that had appeared on Bavarian talers since the 18th century. These issues emphasized the strong connection of the Bavarian monarchy to Catholicism and the tradition of depicting Mary as the symbol of the land’s protection.
