Coin struck at the Vienna mint in 1788 during the reign of Emperor Joseph II, ruler of the Holy Roman Empire and one of the foremost exponents of enlightened absolutism.
This issue, known as a half thaler (kronentaler), was part of the Habsburgs’ broad monetary system aimed at standardizing coinage circulation across their vast dominions, including the Austrian Netherlands.
