According to the tradition and descriptions of ancient historians, the city was founded by Alexander of Macedon on April 7 332 BC. according to the design of Deinochares, an architect known for the reconstruction of Ephesus. From 80 BC the city was controlled by Rome. In a short time it became the seat of Roman authorities and one of the three largest cities of the empire.
