Very rare posthumous medal of Christina, the only daughter of Gustav II Adolf.

At the age of six, Christina became heir to the throne after the death of Gustav Adolf in 1632. At the age of eighteen, she took over Sweden in December 1644. When taking the throne, she promised to marry her cousin, Karl Gustav, Palatine of Two Bridges, whom Chancellor Oxenstierna had chosen for his outstanding military abilities. In 1647, the impatient Swedish estates pressed Christina to fulfill her promise and marry Karl Gustav, but the queen responded evasively. Two years later, Charles Gustaf, with the support of Christina and the nobility, was proclaimed heir to the throne and hereditary prince of Sweden, despite the opposition of the nobility.

In 1650, her ceremonial coronation took place. In 1654, Krystyna abdicated in favor of her would-be husband, Karl Gustav. One of the reasons for her abdication may have been her conversion to Catholicism, which raised fears that she was planning to re-Catholicize Sweden. After her abdication, Karl Gustav took the throne as Karl X Gustav.

After the abdication, Christina unsuccessfully sought the crown of the viceroyalty of Naples, and after the abdication of John Casimir, she planned to run for the throne of Poland.
