Reference: Kopicki 5115 (R5), Friedberg 3168, F.u.S. 1455

Very rare half-ducat from the Złoty Stok mint, struck in 1610 under the joint rule of Dukes John Christian and George Rudolf, the last representatives of the Silesian line of the Piast dynasty.

Variant with six-line legend on the reverse.

The gold coinage of this period served both as circulating money and as prestige issues, emphasizing the political independence and ambitions of the dukes during the turbulent times of the Thirty Years’ War. The reign of John Christian (1591–1639) and George Rudolf (1595–1653) coincided with increasing religious and political tensions in Europe. As Lutherans, they sympathized with the Protestant cause, which exposed them to conflicts with the Habsburgs. Despite difficulties, they maintained active minting, with Złoty Stok being one of the key centers for their ducats and half-ducats.

These coins are highly sought after today, each example representing a tangible testimony to the final chapter of Piast rule in Silesia.

Very attractive piece, slightly bent but with distinct traces of original mint luster in the fields. Sharp detail.
A great rarity, recorded in only a handful of auction appearances over the last twenty years – an exceptional opportunity for collectors of Silesian and Piast gold coinage.

Obverse: quartered coat of arms, date 16–10 to the sides.

Reverse: six-line legend:

MO / AVR D G IO / CHR ET GE / RVD FR D SL / LIG ET BRE / GEN

Gold, diameter 19 mm, weight 1.71 g.
