This ducaton, struck at the Utrecht mint in 1711 and commonly known as the “Rider” (rijder), was one of the most significant silver denominations of the Dutch Republic. The image of the knight symbolized the defense of liberty and independence of the provinces. These coins circulated widely both domestically and in international trade.


Obverse: armored knight brandishing sword on charging horse to right above crowned Utrecht shield
