A very interesting and sought-after propaganda issue from 1939 by Karl Goetz, representing a remarkable addition to collections of coins and medals of the Second Polish Republic.
The design refers to the famous coins by Amrogowicz from 1928, where a crowned eagle appeared on the obverse and the reverse depicted the Virgin Mary with Child. Goetz reused this motif during World War II, creating a propaganda medal for the Third Reich. On the new piece, he placed a swastika on the eagle and legends reading “Miraculous Image of Częstochowa” and “Unharmed under German Guard.”
The obverse features the Virgin Mary with Child, crowned and haloed, with the legend Gnadenbild von Tschenstochau 1939. The reverse depicts an eagle with a swastika, bearing tools of labour on its breast, surrounded by the inscription Unversehrt unter deutschem Schutz. The medal is signed with the initials K·G – Karl Goetz. The edge is inscribed BAYER HAUPTMÜNZAMT SILVER 900 f.
Carefully selected specimen, preserved in excellent condition with an even patina across the surfaces. The details are sharply struck, with all elements clearly visible. The preservation has been confirmed by PCGS, awarded the highest grade in the registry for this type.
A rare and controversial issue from the World War II period by one of the most renowned German medallists. A unique opportunity to enrich a collection of propaganda medals and numismatic pieces connected to the iconography of the Second Polish Republic – highly recommended!
