Issue minted in 1908 to commemorate the 350th anniversary of the founding of the University of Jena (1558).
The institution was established under Elector Johann Friedrich I, who, after the Schmalkaldic War, lost his electorate but retained the right to maintain a university. The commemorative issue highlighted the academic traditions and the essential role of German universities in the development of science and culture.
