Extremely rare banknote of the Free City of Danzig.
First listing on the auction market in Poland of the offered variety with a "C" marking in the margin.
Listed once on the auction market in Poland at the 29th WCN Auction with a final price of 39,600 zloty, but it was a piece marked "A". Earlier in the year, a piece marked "B" appeared at the Stacks Bowers auction with a final price of $18,000.
The only banknote of the 1938 guilder issue that was not put into circulation due to the outbreak of World War II.
Pieces known only as zero-numbered specimens, perforated with two 5mm diameter holes.
Version with iris subprint in ochre green on the obverse and lilac on the reverse.
Banknote certified by PMG with a high PMG 64 EPQ grade. Natural and fresh, with only a minor deflection in the unprinted field.Only one piece graded higher at the time of creating the auction description, this is probably the mentioned piece from the Stack's Bowers auction from earlier in the year.
The huge demand enjoyed by the banknotes issued by the WMG is a result of the artistry of the graphic design and the fantastic printing quality of the English printer Bradbury, Wilkinson & Co. Ltd. for the time. For many collectors, the guilder issue, especially the later one, is considered the most beautiful for banknotes from the interwar period.
Undoubtedly an adornment of our section of paper money from the Free City of Danzig. A collector of WMG banknotes needs many years of experience to understand the rarity of some items. The offered item is precisely one of them. A very rare design of an extremely rare banknote, a banknote for the best collections.
The first national listing of the variety and probably one of the few known pieces of this very rare banknote!
