A municipal badge featuring the coat of arms of Lviv, dating from the period before 1920.
The central element of the badge is the historical coat of arms of the city of Lviv – a city gate with three towers and a lion depicted within the gateway. The composition is surmounted by a crown and surrounded by a decorative oval border.
The design refers to the historical form of the coat of arms established in the privilege granted by Emperor Joseph II in 1789. After the original armorial privilege was lost during the events of 1848, the municipal authorities undertook efforts to reconstruct the historical emblem. In 1883, the Lviv City Council adopted a resolution concerning the restoration of its design, which subsequently continued to be used in the city’s official symbolism.
The badge can be dated to the period before 1920 based on the form of the coat of arms, which does not include the Cross of the Order of Virtuti Militari. Lviv was awarded this decoration on 22 November 1920, and the Virtuti Militari subsequently became one of the characteristic elements of the city’s later heraldic symbolism.
Fastened with three prongs, one broken.
