A badge featuring the coat of arms of the city of Lviv, dating from the late 19th century, most likely from the period after 1883.
In 1883, the Lviv City Council undertook efforts to restore and standardize the official representation of the city’s coat of arms. This followed the loss, during the events of 1848, of the original 1789 armorial privilege issued by Emperor Joseph II together with its authentic depiction of the coat of arms. The municipal authorities conducted research and ultimately restored the historical form of the city’s heraldic emblem.
The central element of the badge is the coat of arms of Lviv, depicting a monumental city gate with three towers and a rampant lion within the gateway. The shield is set against an elaborate decorative cartouche and surmounted by an impressive royal crown.
Fastened with a later soldered safety pin.
From the Collection of Lech Kokociński, Honorary President of the Polish Numismatic Society.
